A Day in My Life as a Controller
Before Work: I am an early riser with my reward being a quiet, peaceful house. I get my coffee (I know I should eat breakfast, but I don't) and head to my office to catch up on some work/personal items before the madness of getting three kids ready for school starts. After dropping them off, I do a morning clean-up while listening to the 'Start Here' podcast. I work better in a clean house!
9:00 a.m. I start my day catching up on emails and checking some daily stats. Our team also has a daily call to discuss our top priorities for the day. Since we are working remotely, it has been great to see people via Zoom every day and stay connected.
10:00 a.m. Most of my tasks are centered around the monthly financials, so depending on the time of the month, I am reviewing and approving customer invoices, vendor bills, revenue postings, and balance sheet reconciliations to ensure everything is accurate.
12:30 p.m.  Get outside for a walk! My neighbor and I have been good about pushing each other to do this, especially now that the weather has been warmer.
1:30 p.m.  I try to carve out some time in the day to focus on process improvements and system enhancements. I also have one-off items like audit requests or ad-hoc reports that come up. While I like to plan out my day, a lot of what comes up was not there in the morning.
4:30 p.m. I try to wrap up any one-off items that have come through during the day, mostly from the team or customers. I also check my schedule for the next few days to make sure I am prepared for what is coming up.
After Work: Most of my evenings are filled with kid activities - lots of shuttling to hockey, soccer, track, and whatever else comes up! Later in the evening, I like to relax on the couch with a good show. I am currently binging The Crown, but my guilty pleasure is also reality TV.
Why did you decide to join Vibes? I have been lucky to find jobs that interest me not only because of the work, but also because of the company, and Vibes is definitely one of those places. I appreciated the time they invested in the interview process, and after it, felt like I already had a great idea of what to expect, which made the decision easy.
What is your favorite aspect of working at Vibes? The people! I honestly have never worked with such a dedicated group. Everyone I interact with puts forth their best effort, which really helps with motivation and momentum. Ironically, I feel closer to my co-workers since we have been working from home, probably because they are such a supportive group.
What challenge are you most excited about? Specifically in my department, we have been working to get more detailed information into our systems to do better analysis. It has been a lot of time and effort, but I am proud of how much the team has accomplished and that we are always looking to improve, even when it is a challenge. We are currently working though some system enhancements, which I am excited about. I am big on process improvement, and believe the investment is time well spent.
