Today, we wanted to address an industry where consumers rely heavily on their phones: travel and hospitality.
Mobile has become an increasingly important tool for travelers: where in 2014, mobile travel sales were just 31.95% of all travel sales, in 2018, they’re estimated to be 86.2% — more than double in just four years. As travel and hospitality brands find innovative ways to use mobile marketing, consumers are adopting these tools and communication channels in flocks. They love how effortless travel has become, thanks to having easy access to travel information and documents on their phones.
SMS/MMS Messaging Keeps Travelers in the Know
Remember the days when you didn’t know your flight was delayed until you arrived at the gate? Now technology helps travelers stay plugged in to what’s happening in regard to their travels. SMS and MMS are excellent channels because they’re ubiquitous (most mobile users access texts frequently), and don’t require a data plan or app to access. (When data access isn’t a given in some areas, being able to connect with your audience is essential.)
Airlines are glomming onto the fact that travelers want information about delayed flights, gate changes, and other flight updates, and are sending those via text message.
But it’s not just travel companies that can leverage SMS/MMS messaging. Transportation companies can alert travelers about issues that might impact their journey, like this example:
Imagine the headache you could help people avoid simply by letting them know that trains will be crowded during a certain time! Partnering with Lyft or Uber, as an example, to offer discounts for people who subscribe to your public transportation service’s SMS/MMS messages is one way you can further the bond with your customers while keeping things moving during high-traffic events.
Mobile Wallet Provides Easy-to-Access Storage for Travel-Related Information
Another great marketing tool for travel and hospitality businesses is the mobile wallet. Not every traveler wants to download an airline’s app, especially if they aren’t frequent travelers on that airline. Being able to save a flight reservation to a mobile wallet makes it easy for them to open and scan their ticket at the airport. No app needed.
Additionally, that reservation housed in the mobile wallet can provide details about a journey, including departure and arrival time, seat information, how to cancel or modify ticket, etc. A user can opt into getting automatic push notifcation updates for that reservation, which keeps them notified of important changes.
Consumers love loyalty cards, but who wants to carry them on a trip? Having digital loyalty cards in a mobile wallet allows a traveler to take advantage of loyalty programs, no matter where they are. You could even send push notification offers for brands they wouldn’t know about otherwise when you detect their location in a new city.
Push Notifications Put Travelers in the Know
If you’ve ever taken an Uber or Lyft, you know that you are updated every few seconds with the status of your requested ride and the location of your driver. It’s immensely useful, particularly if you’re in a strange city.
Push notifications provide a value-add to travelers in that they keep them updated of important details about their voyages and make it easy to click to access boarding passes or tickets. If a traveler is on standby or an upgrade list with an airline, they can get push notifications to keep them apprised of their status.
Mobile marketing for the travel and hospitality industries provides incredible value to travelers. When they have less stress, they enjoy their journey all the more.
